The power of a state...in a single data center

While Wyoming is a red state, it is truly amazing that something as harmful as a data center that uses more power than all the state’s citizens combined will probably still be approved. And sure, Ars mentions that Wyoming is the “least populous US state,” but that really shouldn’t matter since using even 25% of a state’s power grid for AI feels too wasteful.

On Monday, Mayor Patrick Collins of Cheyenne, Wyoming, announced plans for an AI data center that would consume more electricity than all homes in the state combined, according to the Associated Press. The facility, a joint venture between energy infrastructure company Tallgrass and AI data center developer Crusoe, would start at 1.8 gigawatts and scale up to 10 gigawatts of power use.
